The Quote
Editors seek out the first novels with the seductiveness of Don Juans; the pleasure of discovery is one of the obvious reasons.

Wow, Dave, keep up the good work! I think 11.52 would work out to the same as 11:35, so your theory about the decimal conversion is probably right.

I did an hour yesterday,* writing out backstory and poking at character motivation. Those are the two biggest issues, along with sorting out exactly what is going on behind the scenes during the course of the story (the POV character doesn't learn everything until late in the story, but I have to know what's happening and why, and I don't yet). Once all that's sorted, I need to re-outline the whole thing. If I accomplish all of that this month, I'll be happy, even if I don't touch any actual prose.

* Good thing I'm not shooting for 50 hours. I've logged an hour and a half so far.

Wonderer, you could always become a NaNoEdMo rebel and count all the hours you put in on your novel. By that, I mean the time you spend figuring out what the MC should know, outlining and planning, etc., which is far more than rewriting and rewording, polishing the prose, and that sort of typical editing. I agree with a lot of the rebels. Isn't the intended result to have an improved novel? You can edit trash until it shines beautifully, but it's still just pretty trash.

I say count that time and get to 50 hours! You aren't following EdMo's rules, but you are improving your novel by working hard to do it. Give yourself the credit! (Just don't tell anyone!)

For myself, I do draw the line at counting all the hours I spend on doing research. Sometimes I get sidetracked. I don't count anything except the time spent on entering what I need into my novel.

I waited all day till I could edit then I could and I never picked it up.

Argh.

I still have an hour before I must go to bed, but now my head hurts.

Really, none of that officially counts? I haven't actually signed up, but that's a surprise. In any case, that hour and a half includes *everything* I've done on VE this month, so I still wouldn't reach 50 hours, especially as I'm splitting my time between that and finishing my '09 NaNovel. I'm content to hang around here and encourage/be encouraged on editing-related stuff without taking part in the formal challenge.

If I do some research in an evening, I usually count it as 15 minutes no matter how long I spent on it, for that very reason.

Go, KD! Go, Lire! Go, Dave!

As usual, I took my traditional beginning-of-WriMo first few days off before starting EdMo. I'm starting it now. It's my third go-round with my troublesome '07 NaNo novel, Bad Company. But this time it now actually has a coherent plot (I plotted instead of writing it during JanNo, which is why I lost ), so this time I'll be able to finish it. First of all, I'm dividing it into its constituent scenes, which I'll rearrange as if they were index cards. At first I'll organize them by plotline, which will allow me to insert new scenes as needed. Then I'll rearrange before the final one-pass edit.

I'm starting the clock now!

Dennis! Huzzah!

No editing tonight. Too utterly tired. But I think I'm writing a new scene to tack on the beginning of my novel tomorrow. Tonight in my sleep I'll hopefully come up with a couple never-to-be-seen again characters.

Didn't do any editing yesterday because it was Anniversary Day with my SO. Trying to get started today but keep getting distracted by shinies (Russian history, anyone?). I have about 2.5 hours before I have to go do family time, so maybe I'll get something done now.

*cheers everyone on* We can do this!

EdMo's rules seemed surprisingly strict to me the first time I read them. Especially considering how flexible NaNo itself is.

*cheers everyone on*

I'z sick. That's making any work at all impossible.

I got 30 minutes in before work on Friday, but haven't got any time in since. Today is a day off and I have to go to the cub scout meeting (I was volunteered for it) this afternoon, so I should work on it now. The suprise is that the first two scenes were not as bad as I though they would be, meaning there is some promise. Just need to work out a tiny issue called PLOT!!

Good luck everyone on this beautiful Sunday (since it's sunny and 40's here, almost time to work outside).

rules? We don't need no stinkin' rules!

I actually never bothered to read them. I figure I know if I'm editing or not.

Mostly not, it seems. For what I have to show, anyway. Still stuck back on a first scene, though it's my third different first scene.

No editing last night. My SO, the cultural anthropologist, poked holes in all of my worldbuilding and I had to make massive changes so things would now make sense. The bright side is that my world is now much more complex and cool.

The downside is I now have much, much more work to do.

Hoping to get back to the scene slog tonight!

How's everyone else?

Oh, God, Velvet Elvis is EATING MY BRAIN.

I'm trying to sort out my subplots and figure out what the core of the story is and how everything fits together (or if some things ought to be axed), and and and *wibbles and gibbers*

On the other hand, my WIP is moving again.

Wonderer, there are many NaNoEdMo rebels who feel the same way--"None of that counts?" The powers that be on EdMo decided that specific planning that will be used in a specific scene can count, but not plan most of the novel.

I have a feeling there's a ground swell growing. If they don't relax their rules slightly, many people may not return. The question I posted here earlier, Isn't the intended result of NaNoEdMo to make an improved novel? has been presented more than once. Many of these rebels are doing it all anyway--researching, planning, making character profiles, and that sort of thing--and counting it in their total hours. The one in the lead has 80 hours posted right now. I have 21, but that's yesterday's total. I'm not counting planning and research.

There are enough people who are unhappy with NaNoWriMo to have formed a NaNoWriMo Rebels forum. Many of them don't like the idea that you MUST begin a new novel every year and they just continue working on a former novel.

I have two unfinished NaNoWriMo novels, one has been increased to 100,000, and the last one where I ended it at 55,000. I am seriously thinking I will continue one of them in 2010 rather than start another new one.
