The Quote
I have never thought of myself as a good writer. Anyone who wants reassurance of that should read one of my first drafts. But I'm one of the world's great rewriters.

One of the things I'm doing this month is editing my '06 NaNovel, Velvet Elvis. It's actually a continuation of an edit that I've been doing on and off this past year (before NaNo). Anyone else editing right now?

If you're not sure where to start, there's a thread with some good tips here: http://www.nanopubye.org/modules/newbb/viewtopic.php?topic_id=20&viewmode=flat&order=DESC&start=15

I'd really like to be editing this month, but I'm not quite sure that it's going to happen. Hopefully things will calm down once my apartment has recovered from NaNo.

I am editing my NaNo from this year while I finish a novel from July for NaNoEdMo. We'll see how it goes trying to do both at once, plus homework. I'm sure to be busy.

Well, I'm still editing my Nano'05, have been off and on for the last three and a half years.

Now, finally with a reader attached to it.

I need to edit The Seasons of Sam Rock. It's the closest thing I have to being publishable at the moment. Also need to work on various other projects in various stages of completion.

Well, I'm not editing in December. I'm going to take a two month break and start editing in February. I think I'm going to use Holly Lisle's One Pass Revision and maybe do NaNo EdMo. Once my NaNo novel is rewritten and edited, I'll order the free CreateSpace copy with the special code on the NaNo site.

I took Holly Lisle's 26 week course How to Think Sideways, which helped me as a writer. I have yet to write a novel following all her suggestions. She has two chapters on what she calls a one-pass edit. I used them to edit Transference last year. Now I'm taking her brand new course, How to Revise your Novel.

I am positive the revision process will become much more difficult as we get into it, and that is my one BIG hope. I know Transference isn't perfect, although after following Lesson 1, I have just gone a fourth of the way through it and found only eight needed changes. Multiply that by four, equals 32 or maybe 40, and there aren't very many.

I sure hope I have more! The novel seems deficient is at least three places, and I don't know how to fix it. That's why I'm taking the course.

Anyway, I am concentrating all my writing time and energy on completing this course.

Silly question, but is either of the courses by e-mail and does not require any payment? She is awesome :)

Be well,
Xiri

Yes. Both are by e-mail, and yes, they require that green stuff that most beginning writers don't have. She does have reasonable prices.

I don't remember how much How to Think Sideways cost, maybe $89 a month for four months or so, but it's a moot point. She has temporarily discontinued offering it to new people while she works on How to Revise Your Novel.

One very nice thing about buying How to Think Sideways is that she gives graduates discounts. How to Revise Your Novel costs $49 a month for three months at regular price, and $39 for graduates of How to Think Sideways.

She hasn't committed yet for HTRYN, but for HTTS grads, she has continued to send extra information. In both cases, participants are encouraged to sign up for work groups, and those will continue even after graduation. The graduates are moved into new graduate workshops. Nice and helpful!

Go to Holly Lisle.com and read about How to Revise Your Novel. The only requirement other than payments is that you must have written novel so you can edit it. Do not accept my word on the price--find what she says. The first class may be close to being filled, but you can sign up on a waiting list.

The sum is about all what I and grandma live off for a month on food - well, we get 'more' than that, but... It's still a pretty big amount.

Be well,

Xiri, I'm very much broke most of the time too. Holly Lisle has an article on the site explaining One-Pass, and that's what I use. She came up with the How To Revise Your Novel course because people said they couldn't do One-Pass in one pass.

Well, neither could I, but I just kept doing it until I was happy. Each pass I made improved my manuscript SO MUCH, that I was willing to do it again.

She's been where we are--broke--and she likes to help us out.

Yipes, I read One Pass, bu I'm one of those who shudder at printing everything out and crossing the stuff out - oh, that scene was 'so' easy to write, so precious... :-s

Then again, I have yet to finish the first draft ;)

Be well,
Xiri
