Here it is! The NaNoEdMo open thread!

This is the place to tell us of your joys and agonies, to recount your woes, your facepalms, your WTF!!s, and read those of your fellow manuscript-slogging writers. Here we will support each other and brainstorm and cooperate to beat those stories into submission, and at the end we will emerge with BETTER STORIES.

Come on in, and tell us what you're working on, and what you hope to get done this month and how!

Or just come in and have a quiet drink.

I'm not really nervous for EdMo. It's not as huge of a deal as NaNo is to me, so I don't mind if I get all 50 hours in or not. I don't want to spend every free second of the next month editing, I just want some motivation to get the novel revised. In April, I'll do the rewrite/type-in all the changes. In May-

OMG! May is only 2 months away? What???? I don't want the year to go by this fast!

Anyway, in May I'll polish the prose and fix anything else I have to. I'll have at least one of my family members read it and give me good criticism on it. Then I'll order my free CreateSpace copy.

And after that... well, go check out my personal thread if you care about what I do later this year.

What revision methods are you guys doing? I'm doing the One-Pass Revision.

*is here, is nervous, would like that quiet drink now*

You're sure we're going to come out with better stories in the end? You're POSITIVE?

*sits and drinks and wibbles*

I can't believe it's March. I don't do one pass. I actually do about 3 or 4 complete edits. My first project will be polishing a short story for a contest, then I'll go on the Sam Rock and Black Oak. I should get at least 50 hours in.

I'm not shooting for 50 hours either, but I'm planning to use EdMo to sort out some issues with Velvet Elvis. See, I've been editing chapter by chapter, but I've hit the build-up to the climax, and now I really need to step back and figure out everyone's motivation and timelines and such. I've been avoiding doing that for long enough. So I'm starting with the first part of the one-pass and the first few steps of snowflaking. If I get far enough, I may re-outline the chapters that have already been edited and/or re-outline the parts I need to edit next.

*quakes in her boots*

bjullie, I don't do the one-pass, although I use the first part as a guideline. I'm still in the middle of doing my first novel edit ever, but so far it has resulted in a lot of new prose as I fill in the middle of the novel. Next it may get a complete rewrite, depending on what comes out of the steps I described above.

Good luck, everyone! Bottoms up!

I just got home from school, so I don't have any hours in yet. I don't think I'm really going to focus on the hours, just getting the thing revised.

I'm a little discouraged right now because I got a critique on another forum that pointed out a LOT of wrong things and nothing good. I honestly haven't gotten that bad of a critique before, and I thought it was okay, but my writing was kind of sloppy.

that hurts. I like to pout for a bit when such things happen to me, then I generally get mad and write lots more. It works for me.

I want to get home and get to work! I'm getting so excited for this!

'spinner, as you are awesome, I am absolutely certain you are going to come out with a better story. It will be TONS better, and you will have a much better idea where you're headed. A good edit makes you write better, too--to avoid doing all that work again!

Yay, Ann!

Wonderer, we're with you! you can do this!

I do One-Pass, for the record, but I always (so far) have to go back and do it again some time later. When I've been doing it as long as Holly Lisle, I'm sure I'll be able to do it in one pass.

Bad critiques are not helpful. Helpful critques are, and you can quote me on that. In our local group, we actually offer constructive suggestions and always have something good to say about a piece.

Got my start on EdMo. Did an hour last night. On to bigger and better times.

Don't worry about the critique too much bjullie. Take out the none constructive parts and use what you know really helps. We all get bad critiques sometimes and it feels horrible, I know. I mean, I once almost stopped a work in progress because of a bad critique, but that's a HUGE mistake. What you need to know is that only the parts of the critiques that help you grow as a writer manner, and that every bad critique is a way of growing and improving, a way of getting better.

Now... as for my Edmo... Really slow... 2 hours and 20 minutes! In 2 days! I mean I was supposed to do more yesterday but I took a bit of a longer nap than I had planned to. And then once I turned on my laptop, took out my notes and began working! My best friend called... with a crisis on a Spanish project do the next day. I tried multitasking and did a bit of editing, but yeah... not much. Anyway! My hopes are up. I'm taking this less seriously than Nano, but I will do my best to reach the 50.
Things to do:
-Finish rewrite
-Try one pass or which ever other method that works

I did 1 2/3 hours yesterday, two hours today. The first scheduled bout of confidence-induced panic has set in.

I'm...convinced I'm going to get to the end of the slog and KNOW how to make it better, but not have the skills to do so.

absolutely, utterly, NOT GOING TO HAPPEN, 'spinner.

I got 80 minutes tonight, most of that bashing at theme, character arc, stuff like that. The blurb defeated me.

FOR TONIGHT.

Tomorrow--

I'm off to a great start. Monday the 1st, 3 hours.
Tuesday the 2nd, I didn't have to work and put in 7.
Today, I worked and put in 1.25. When I added them all into the EdMo Hours Logger, it gave me more minutes. 11.52, I think. It should be 11:35--maybe that is 11.52 in decimals. I'll figure it out and correct it tomorrow when I add the new total.

I expect to go in spurts. I make the hours by resisting everything that distracts like TV, surfing the Web, reading my e-mail, and all that. I go through my e-mail and delete most of it after a brief read. Only the ones that are very important to me get answered, and the rest wait a few days. That can't go on for a month. That's why some days, no editing gets done while I catch up on e-mail and other things.

In addition, we aren't supposed to count hours spent on doing research, just the hours in rewriting as a result of having to incorporate the new research. I do a lot of new research! Too bad it doesn't count.

I am editing four (yes, 4) different novels, two completed, and two in progress. That way, when I tire of one, or need a break from it, I have a different one to work on. I started doing this in early February, and so far, it's working.
