I finished a WIP with nano last year, using the justification that I had already written two novels the NaNo way. Also Chris Baty said I could. Anyways, the point of NaNo is to write a novel. The point of EdMo is to make that novel better. I don't understand why people have to go around and make it more complicated and exclusionary than it needs to be. Of course, that would also be why I stay off the forums and come here, where people accept me and my wild ways.

You accept my wild ways, right?

Moving right along... I'm at 18 hours, and the scene slog is done. Now for a break I'm going to do some worldbuilding (which I won't be counting, hours-wise) and then I'll move into making the physical changes. I have an accidental long weekend, so I hope to make good use of my time.

*leaves hugs and cheers for everyone*

Accidental long weekend? I could use one of those. *cheers for yours anyway*

Dave, have you heard of the Zokutou Clause? It's an unofficial exception to the NaNo rules that states that if you've won NaNo once under the regular rules, you can claim 50,000 words on a WIP as a win. Technically if you do this you shouldn't claim your purple bar, but as nobody will know, it's really up to you.

I haven't found the need to invoke the clause yet, but I'm not ruling it out for the future.

I'm not into exclusionary. I just do what I want to do, but then even though I'm a NaNo member, I rarely spend much time on the forums.

I've meant to do Zokutou a couple times now, but I end up finishing the novel before NaNo.

EdMo is going down in a ball of flames, but life is blowing up in my face. In fact they announced that my kid's school is on the chopping block, which just so happens to be one of the top performing schools in the corporation. Makes sense doesn't it. So, we've been working on a Save Our School campaign. Hopefully it works, but if not I'm also looking at other options (having a child with severe speech delays really limits the other options).
Okay enough about real life. I'm off to work and then hopefully editing later tonight (after the PTO meeting). Great job to all.

No, Wonderer, I have never heard of the Zokutou Clause. But I think I will invoke it rather than begin another novel while four are left unfinished.

kdsarge, I'm fairly sure I have mentioned the forums on NaNoWriMo. I also visit the forums on NaNoEdMo. In both cases, I usually visit only a few.

On NaNoWriMo, just "Character and Plot Realism" and "Plot Doctoring" although I occasionally visit others. I have gleaned a wealth of information from them that I have used in my novels, mostly posts of personal experiences and references to specific Websites. I have posted some answers and some questions, too. For some reason, WriMo never works to update me on new posts, so it requires a weekly check to see what's new.

On EdMo, I get notifications of new posts, so I don't have to scan through all that I would visit otherwise. The four books I am working on are all in different genres, so the notifications save me time.

kd, thanks for the information on guns. I get notifications from that site, too. The URL is Weapons_Info@yahoogroups.com. This is a post that tells a lot about the site. AnnNoE, you're writing s detective story, I think, so it might be interesting to you. Quote:
The beauty of this group is the wide variety of education we have available to tap. A rather simple question has evolved into an informativediscussion on criminalistics, ballistics, forensics, and weapons. I love this group. . .
T S

I have yet to ask any questions, but the information is great and its interesting to read even if I don't care about a certain gun.

I just found this on a forum on EdMo. It is from one of their staff, and it clears up some of what I have said.

This is an interesting discussion and I completely agree that there needs to be some further clarification around the particular part of the rules that states: "It does not include planning or researching." I think there's also a second discussion going on about the existance of EdMo Rebels, ala the NaNo Rebels.

Researching is acceptable if you've come to a particular passage or scene where you need to know a specific piece of information to improve it. In this case you'd break from the manuscript, look up the piece of info you need and then get back to the manuscript to make the necessary changes. If however, you go to look up a piece of information and end up reading a whole book about the subject then the focus is no longer fully on editing that part of the manuscript. You might need to go back to the book several times as you reach different parts in your manuscript but the point is to keep moving through each scene, each paragraph, to keep making progress.

Planning is acceptable where you might be dealing with a scene outline of the manuscript, you're still working on the big picture structure of the story and though you're not into the nitty gritty of the prose you're still changing the structure of previously written material.

Another example of a non-editing activity was about character development. The lines do blur here because writers deal with character development differently. Some can develop just what's necessary for the story like in the research example but others need to get a complete feel for the character before being able to write them in or even outline them in. I would suggest that the same guidelines as research apply to character development, world building, etc.

If you're still finding yourself breaking the rules based on the clarification above then you are an EdMo Rebel. If you're still doing what needs to be done to revise your novel, to get to that point where you can start changing things then you are acting in the spirit of EdMo, though not strictly within the rules. That's what makes you an EdMo Rebel.

I hope that helps to clarify things and I'll cross-post this to the Rules forum.

I am comfortable with all I said before. I will pass 25 hours today with about 60% of the month left to go. That will not be counting any of today till now that was spent on research!

*hugs everyone*

I've been worldbuilding all day. Tomorrow I have to be productive because I told KD I would be. Also I would at least like to break 20 hours.

*snuggles* I am sure you say this so that you can mislead us all and pull-off an amazing tortoise win in the end while I lose all momentum and stop at like...30 hours or something.

Despite my day descending into one large vat of suckitude, I have completely finished one scene. We will largely ignore that it took me about four hours to do so.
